Medical Screening of the Spine for Client Referral (MT10)

This course begins with general referral guidelines applicable to any patient complaint.  A brief review of normal physiology will be provided as a basis to understanding non-musculoskeletal hypothesis formation and the impact of pathology on rehabilitation planning.

The course is then organized by area of presenting symptom, for example low back pain. We will explore pathology from the viewpoint of how it contributes to common patient complaints of discomfort/ pain. For each local area of discomfort, a systems screen will be discussed and tools provided to assist the therapist with implementation in the clinic. These tools include the ScreenAssist Questionnaires developed in collaboration with internal medicine physicians.

Case studies will be performed in groups to assist the participant in recognizing risk factors for pathology, identifying signs and symptoms inconsistent with musculoskeletal pain, integrating diagnostic imaging/pharmacology into hypothesis formation, and determining precautions/ contraindications for therapy. Complex patients with multiple co-morbid conditions will be presented to allow for discussions on treatment and goal modification. Communication with physicians and physician extenders will be addressed to allow concise and affective relay of concerns.

MT-10 Objectives

Demonstrate…

knowledge of the nerve convergence theory and how it relates to visceral  pain patterns through the assessment of patient case scenarios.

Analyze…

the role and limitations of utilizing constitutional symptoms in the medical  screening process.

Integrate…

basic knowledge of system function and dysfunction when constructing a hypothesis for a non-musculoskeletal diagnosis based on symptoms presented in case scenarios. These systems include pulmonary, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, neurological and integumentary.

Evaluate…

the need for physician referral by identifying clusters of symptoms that lead to suspecting, confirming or ruling out the most common non-musculoskeletal pathology encountered by physical therapists.

Organize…

information in a concise manner that can be easily interpreted when communicating concerns to other medical professionals
