Manipulation is not just for the spine. Manual therapy can certainly impact the shoulder, elbow, and wrist patient. The opposite is also true, manipulation of the hip can significantly impact the lumbar spine, as well as normalize knee extension for foot mobility. The biomechanical and neurophysiological chains require both caudal and cranial interventions. Research evidence, as well as clinical evidence, has shown that extremity manipulation has a remarkable impact in treating a wide variety of orthopedic conditions. You will learn manual therapy techniques that will significantly reduce hip pain, achieve terminal knee extension, resolve lateral elbow epicondylalgia, normalize ankle dorsiflexion instantly, improve shoulder motor control for elevation. With biomechanical and neurophysiological impacts, learn how to dramatically speed up your patient’s progress. Clinical decision-making skills will emphasize the “how-to, when to, and why to”, as well as the “when not to” for extremity manipulation. Seasoned clinicians provide participants with guidance on their posture during the technique, foot position, and hand placement to increase the technique’s effect and success and drastically improve comfort for the patient. The rationale for clinical decision-making for the use of manipulation and specific techniques will be discussed. As a primary lab course, ample time is given to learn and practice up to 20 techniques for the extremity joints. This course is taught by senior faculty utilizing manual therapy in the clinic every day.

MT-8 Objectives

At the completion of the two-day course in spinal manipulation techniques the students will be able to:

• Describe and demonstrate the set-up and any necessary locking used in extremity thrust techniques necessary to ensure comfort and safety.

• Demonstrate proficiency in pre-thrust positioning at the upper and lower limb regions.

• Demonstrate proficiency in the delivery of thrust techniques at the upper and lower limb regions.

• Demonstrate thrust techniques for the upper and lower limb regions.

• Evaluate and perform manipulations (HVT) as an integrated part of the physical therapy intervention.

• Recognize the importance of being informed about the most current developments in research for indications and contraindications available, and comply with laws and regulations concerning manipulations (HVT) in the various United States.
